Saturday night I was lucky enough to see the East Coast Hockey League’s Pee Dee Pride play (and beat) the Roanoke Express.
It was really a great night. The tickets were cheap (six people cost almost as much as one cheap Ranger ticket. The crowd, though tiny, was energetic, and the players on the ice were fine. I wasn’t looking for Olympic level play. I just wanted to see some hockey. And in that sense, I more than got my money’s worth. Even with the lights over the ice going out, causing a 30-minute delay.
The whole evening just served as a brutal reminder of how messed up professional sports is, though. It’s just such an elitist thing now. Owners seem to do everything to keep the fans out.
I wish Queens had a minor-league hockey team.
