All season long Islander coach Peter Laviolette has maintained that his team wasn’t as awful as their record indicated. He talked about bad bounces and about how the team just needed to click. Everyone kind of wrote him off. But maybe he was right. The Isles spanked Tampa Bay 7-2, chasing Tampa super goalie and NHL Player of the Week Nikolai Khabibulin out of goal.
Now obviously this is one game and it doesn’t mean anything. But it is interesting to think about — maybe the Islanders aren’t as bad as everyone thought (although in fairness to the Isles, their major weakness is goalie Chris Osgood, who sat out tonight).
Another thing to consider is that the Isles roasted their coach a few days ago. Maybe they just need to hang with the Friars more.
