Dear Ken, I’m Sorry

Once again I find myself apologizing to Ken Hitchcock and the Philadelphia Flyers. I’ve criticized Hitchcock’s oppressive defensive system a lot. But the Flyers seem to have turned a corner with it. They’re now a scoring machine. First, four goals against LA, then five against Atlanta, three against Buffalo, and last night, four goals in a win against the Islanders. And this is all without John LeClair.
Goalie Roman Cechmanek is still acting kind of weird. He blanked the Islanders, a strong team that had a ton of momentum going into last night’s game. But he gave up four to Atlanta. You have to wonder how good the Flyers would be with a more solid goalie. Or even backup Robert Esche, who pitched a shutout against Anaheim last week.
Also, Hitchcock is pissed he’s the assistant coach for the All-Star Game. He wanted to visit with his family in Dallas. And also the fact that the All-Star Game is such a scoring orgy must really freak him out. Hitch will coach under Ottawa’s Jacques Martin (who must be curious if he gets paid for this gig) and against Vancouver’s Marc Crawford and Motor City rookie Dave Lewis.
