The shocking thing about Chicago GM Mike Smith getting fired?
That it didn’t happen sooner. It just seemed like he would never be fired. He ran the team into the ground and nobody seemed to mind. I thought the owners were cool with that.
It seems relations between Smith and coach Brian Sutter became so strained, one of them needed to be bounced. Smith lost. Interestingly, none of the Hawks knew anything was up.
Former San Jose Shark GM Dean Lombardi, the son-in-law of Blackhawk senior vice president Bob Pulford, is expected to get the nod as new GM. But people have been saying that since Lombardi was fired last season. Lombardi is great at building teams, though. Nepotism aside, the Blackhawks could do a lot worse than Lombardi.
