Devils Need to Market, Not Just Win
There was a lot of good hockey stuff in the Times yesterday.
This is yet another story on how no one goes to Devils games. Except when the Devils play in other markets. Then the people turn out. Given that the Devils have a great road record, maybe they should just take the show on the road and roam the country.
I wonder if that’s allowed. You know. For anyone but the Expos.
The whole “no one is more important than the team” concept has served Devils GM Lou Lamoriello well in terms of winning and controlling payroll, but people like superstars. Sure Devils like Martin Brodeur and Scott Stevens are superstars, but they’re not marketed like they are. If hockey really is a business, Lamoriello should probably be willing to promote some players, even if it means having to pay them more. Or keep them for more than a few seasons. The money he loses on the contracts just might be made up in the gate receipts.
But I do love the Times’ implied suggestion that maybe the Devils need ice girls like the Islanders have.
Because people will come out to games to see two minutes of a woman on skates. This isn’t the 1920s. You can see women in tight clothes just about everywhere now.
The Devils shut-out the Caps 3-0 last night.
