Sloppy Play Finally Shocks Bolts

It’s not really shocking the Flyers beat Tampa Saturday. It’s shocking it took so long. As good as Tampa’s been, they’ve had long, long periods of sloppy play. In the first round series against the Islanders, goalie Nikolai Khabibulin kept the Lightning in the series when they lost their focus in the first two games. In the second round, Vincent Lecavalier and his five goals pushed Tampa past the Habs.
Saturday, Tampa’s discipline faltered and there was no one to pick up the pieces.
Coach John Tortorella (or “the Great Tortellini,” as Bobby Clarke might say) needs to remind his team that defense is what wins Cups. If no one is willing to be a hero in this round, then all of the Bolts have to protect their blue line.
