Here’s an interesting item from Dave Molinari at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: McFarlane Toys, who make a ton of those sports figurines (or dolls, if you want to be brutally honest, really), made the Jarome Iginla doll white (Iginla is biracial). How white? Whiter than the Scandanavian Saku Koivu, with whom his doll, er, action figure, shares packaging. Seriously. See for yourself. I’m guessing these figures will sell like hot cakes on eBay.
Speaking of race and the NHL, I read Cecil Harris’ Breaking the Ice: The Black Experience in Professional Hockey a few weeks ago. It’s a really comprehensive look at the struggle of the black NHL player. Very sad, but very engaging. Iginla’s guiding his team to the Stanley Cup finals will be a nice new chapter in future editions.
