Owners: ’24% Raises For Everyone!’

The thing I most love about the 24% pay-cut the union is offering is that it does a great job of giving the owners enough rope to hang themselves with. Assuming the league approves of the union’s plan, or something similar to it, how long do you think it will be until the owners have salaries back where they were before the lockout? How long do you think it will be before a 25 goal scorer is getting $5 million a year? And then what will the owners do? Who will they blame this time?
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman really needs the salary cap for the owners, not for the players. He needs cost certainty because his owners are ill-equipped to provide it.
The union’s proposal, if nothing else, forces Bettman to admit that the league’s problems rest squarely on the shoulders of management.
