So Wayne Gretzky’s first game as a coach didn’t go so well.
The Kings beat the Coyotes 8-4, mostly on shoddy goaltending by Curtis Joseph.
But something interesting thing came out of the ugly loss: a line featuring Brett Hull, Petr Nedved, and Ladislav Nagy. It’s a well-balanced line. In a lot of ways, I wish every NHL line had that mix of size, grit, and finesse. Sure there’s no defense, but you don’t need that in the new NHL.
Gretzky said he thought his team might have been nervous and trying to impress him.
He should probably figure out a way to get the team to work through that. Because I can’t imagine they’ll ever reach a point where they’re not impressed with him.
