Larry Brooks says the Rangers are going to make a go at New Jersey Devil Scott Gomez once he’s a free agent next year.
I’ve often thought about how the play-making Gomez would look on the Rangers’ second line, playing between snipers Brendan Shanahan and Petr Prucha. But I know Devils’ GM Lou Lamoriello would never make a deal with the Rangers. If I had to guess how this will go down, I’d say Lamoriello will trade him to a Western conference team with the cap space to make a run at Gomez and then he’ll just pray Gomez re-signs rather than testing the market. As St. Louis sheds players, it would make a lot of sense for the Devils to take on a veteran for their own playoff run (Doug Weight seems to be lucky), while giving up Gomez, who they can’t afford to re-sign anyway. Blues coach Andy Murray, who seems to favor an up-tempo offense, would love building around Gomez.
I’m also intrigued by the idea of Gomez in Phoenix. While Gomez is no Gretzky, his speed and finesse occasionally veer into Gretzky-esque territory.
Also, congrats to Matt Gannon, whose IN THE CREASE documentary was the top sports DVD on Amazon the week before Christmas. I’m embarrassed to admit I haven’t gotten a chance to watch it yet, but as soon as I do, I’ll post a review here.
