I know I’m late on this, but I’m shocked Mike Keenan is going to Calgary. I’m not shocked previous coach Jim Playfair got the quick hook. After Calgary’s first round exit, it seemed that fans wanted Playfair to pay the price. And I’m not shocked that Darryl Sutter would go after a coach who’s both defense-oriented and not scared to torture his players. I am shocked that Sutter would hire a coach who’s rather notorious for undermining his GMs, though. Isn’t that why Keenan allegedly left Florida? Does Sutter want to have to worry about building a successful and team while simultaneously watching his back? Did Sutter hire the next GM of the Flames? Maybe he and Keenan will get along famously. Maybe Keenan will just want to focus on coaching. But if I’m Sutter, I’m definitely installing a rearview mirror on my desk.
Also, I’m not a huge, huge fan of the NHL awards, but Matt Law wrote a great comment on OffWing, explaining what makes the much maligned Lady Byng so great: the fact that it represents unpenalized, disciplined defensive excellence. Especially in the new NHL, where if your stick leaves the ice, there’s a 50-50 chance you’re going to get called for a hook.
