Single White Devils Captain

Patrik Elias is out 3-6 weeks with groin surgery and the Devils are being coy about finding help via a trade or free agency.

The Devils are already pretty thin. There’s no second line center. Brandon Shanahan has been spending time on the top line. It’s starting to feel like if one more top player goes down, fans might be invited to skate in a game.

Obviously, the Devils don’t want to seem too desperate, because opposing GMs will take advantage of that. But seriously. The Devils need to finish their line-up. I’m sure it doesn’t seem like a big deal during the pre-season, but during the season, you probably want an NHL-quality roster.

Speaking of Shanahan, he served as team captain for last night’s game since captain Jamie Langenbrunner wasn’t in the line-up. Between taking Langenbrunner’s C and his line spot, the two of them seem to be into some kind SINGLE WHITE FEMALE death spiral. If I’m Langenbrunner, if Shanahan shows up with a puppy, I’m out of there.

One option New Jersey doesn’t have is former Devil Petr Sykora, who is playing well in Wild camp on a tryout. Michael Russo seems to think a contract offer is imminent.
